Challenge

Via is a ride-sharing service that launched in Manhattan in 2014, positioning itself as a more affordable and environmentally conscious alternative to standard ride-hailing by pairing riders headed in the same direction. Its ecosystem comprises a driver app, a rider app, an online driver registration portal, and a business portal. SoftTeco initially joined on the Android versions of the driver and rider apps and grew over time into a core part of Via’s development and QA team, supporting an expanding, multi-part system that has to work across different cities, countries and regulatory environments.

Solution

SoftTeco has been an integral part of Via's development team since 2014, now maintaining the ride-sharing service's entire app and portal ecosystem.

SoftTeco now builds and maintains all four parts of Via’s ecosystem. The driver app guides drivers along custom pickup routes, supports fast rerouting, and pushes update notifications, with a „CityConfig“ mechanism that keeps the app correctly localized as it expands worldwide. The rider app lets users request rides, locate drivers on a map, and book shared landing points rather than individual stops, supports multiple payment methods (including Google Pay, Apple Pay and PayPal), and integrates services such as Leanplum, Radar, mParticle and Google Maps. The registration portal walks drivers through the full onboarding process — document upload, e-signature and identity verification — and is tightly connected to Salesforce via an AWS Lambda interface; it was originally built for U.S. cities and later extended to Europe. The business portal, aimed at corporate clients, offers route planning, transportation monitoring and the ability to arrange rides for guests, with its feature set scaling according to an employee’s role.

Results

SoftTeco now delivers the full development cycle for Via, with new cities and sub-projects continuously being added to the system. The team also provides round-the-clock technical support and oversees the performance of Via’s entire ecosystem. The relationship, ongoing since 2014, reflects a long-standing partnership.
